How to Keep a Clean Desktop

This article will walk you through how to go from this:
To this:
That last picture is what my current desktop looks like. It is completely clean, and has no desktop icons, widgets, or anything else on it. As you can tell, I’m not an icon or widget person. I love having a clean desktop. I have tested this on both Windows XP and Windows Vista, but it may also work on older versions of Windows.
The Procedure
- Right click on your desktop.
- Disable desktop icons:
- Windows Vista: Right click the desktop and uncheck View > Show Desktop Icons.

- Windows XP: Right click the desktop and uncheck Arange Icons By > Show Desktop Icons. If you do not see this option, follow the instructions here to enable the option.
- Windows Vista: Right click the desktop and uncheck View > Show Desktop Icons.
- Right click on an empty spot on your Taskbar, and check Toolbars > Desktop.

- If you want your Taskbar to auto-hide, right click again on an empty spot on your Taskbar and click Properties. Check “Auto-hide the taskbar.” Click OK.

Now, your desktop should be free of icons, you should have a desktop toolbar, and your Taskbar should be automatically hiding if you chose so. If you depended on your icons, then I’d suggest downloading and getting used to Launchy. I don’t know how I ever lived without it. It is a quick and easy way to launch applications and folders. Other than that, you can of course use your new Desktop toolbar to access your desktop icons, or use your start menu to access folders and programs.
