Recommended Software: Appupdater

By Josh | December 19, 2007

If you like using the command line for different things then you will like Appupdater. When installed, it uses certain commands to install and remove software. It is like the apt-get command for Debian Linux, so it will be very familiar to you if you have used a Debian based Linux distro. I think it is a great idea, and it allows you to easily install some software without having to search for it and download it off of the internet.

The repository that is included doesn’t come with a whole lot of software, but it has a good selection. Don’t expect anything like what the Ubuntu repositories have. If this program gets popular, I could see some much larger repositories getting made.

There is also a GUI available if you do not want to use the command line to install/remove software. I’d rather use the command line because it seems to be easier once you get used to it. The GUI is fairly ugly too in my opinion. Some of the programs that you try to install using the command line cannot be run in silent mode (silent mode means that it installs in the background without any user interaction). There is an option that you can add to the install command to install the software without silent mode.

Some of the commands are:

  • appupdater –available
    • This shows a list of available software
  • appupdater –list
    • Lists software that you have installed
  • appupdater –install=PKG
    • Installs the program specified

For a list of more commands, visit here. There is also more information on different options for the available commands.
