Free Software to Expand the Clipboard
By Josh | February 9, 2008
Expanding the clipboard can be very useful when you are constantly copying and pasting. Software like Clipdiary adds some functionality to your clipboard that you will probably wish you already had. However, Clipdiary is not the only piece of clipboard expanding software out there. You may have read about Clipdiary at a site like Download Squad, but is it the best clipboard expansion software out there?
Features of Clipdiary:
Clipdiary sits in your system tray and monitors what you copy to your clipboard. It then keeps track of everything that you copy so you can then get it later if you need to. It doesn’t seem to have a limit on how much it stores; so you could probably keep track of stuff that you copied a year ago if you needed to. The one bad thing with this software is that it has no way of telling you what an image is. I think they should definitely add some type of viewer to view what the image is that you copied. Right now, images are just labeled “Image.”
Alternatives:
- ControlC is an alternative that you might have read in a previous post of mine. It has a good idea, but the more I think about it, the more I think that it probably won’t work that great. Trying to make the clipboard into a social site is just… weird. Also, I really can’t think of any reason why I’d need to access my clipboard from any other computer. ControlC just runs some software on your computer that will track what you copy to your clipboard, and then it will store it in your online profile that you can access from anywhere. It is in private beta, but I have 5 invites I can give out if you want one.
- 101 Clips is another alternative that is similar to Clipdiary. It sits in your system tray, and tracks what you copy to your clipboard. It only keeps track of the previous 25 things that you copied, which is probably enough for most people. The one thing that I really like about this software is that it pops up a preview of the image that you copied so you can tell what the heck it is. If you want to recopy something again, all you have to do is double click the item and it is added to your clipboard.

Which one’s better?
Good question. It’s a very hard choice to choose from Clipdiary and 101 Clips. For right now I think I’m going to use 101 Clips since I can see the images that I copied. Trying to sort through the Clipdiary images to get the one you want could be a pain. I don’t think I’m going to use ControlC for a while, unless I really see something that I think could be useful. Clipdiary could definitely be my favorite if they would just add a preview option for images, especially since it stores a lot more than 101 Clips.
