Run Linux Apps on Windows with AndLinux

By Josh | February 26, 2008

I have openSUSE installed on a separate partition, but I hardly ever take the time to boot into it. I use things on Windows that just aren’t available on Linux, so I really have no reason to use it. For one example, I use Rhapsody to download and transfer songs to my mp3 player. The Rhapsody program does not work on Linux, so it would be a pain to launch back into Windows every time I needed to use it.

What andLinux does is it allows you to run Linux apps seamlessly on Windows. It will install linux over top of Windows, and you can then use Synaptic to download and install Linux apps. It worked very well for me when I installed it, and I used the XFCE version because I didn’t want to use the bandwidth to download the KDE version. The only problem I had was that the audio didn’t work. They posted a work around for the audio problem on the forums, but that didn’t work for me either.

For now, I have andLinux uninstalled. Most software that I would use on Linux, I can already get on Windows. It also took up a good amount of RAM, and it just wasn’t worth it to me since I didn’t use it that often. I would recommend it however for somebody who wants to try out Linux without leaving the comfort of Windows, or to someone who can’t install Linux for some reason and they only like using Linux. If you have a lot of RAM, then RAM won’t be a problem, but I need all the RAM I can get for running Vista.

I’d download it and give it a try though if it looks like something that interests you. There is a great guide over at Lifehacker.
