Automatically change your background with Desktoptopia

By Josh | April 8, 2008

Every now and then I need to find a new background for my desktop because I just get tired with the current one. There are of course great websites like socwall.com where you can find all kinds of quality backgrounds, but sometimes you just don’t have the time to go searching around for one. Desktoptopia (besides it’s name needing to be changed) is a great little program that changes your background automatically for you.

Desktoptopia requires the .Net Framework 3.5 in order to work on Windows. It works on both Mac and Windows, and is now free to download. Desktoptopia gets the wallpapers from feeds that contain the wallpapers. You have the option to use their feeds, which are updated with wallpapers that they add, or you could create your own feed. You can also change the frequency for which the backgrounds change. I have mine set to change once a day. Oh, and you can also rate the backgrounds.

If you have multiple monitors, then they seem to support using different backgrounds on each monitor. I can’t test this out since I only have one monitor. It also has automatic resolution detection so that it will resize the background to fit your desktop.

Desktoptopia is in beta, and Download Squad seemed to have some issues when they tried it out. It loaded fine for me, and seems to be working fine. I’m using Windows Vista so you may get different results on XP.
