AVIcodec: Easily find missing audio and video codecs

By Josh | April 11, 2008

Finding codecs for certain video and audio file types can be a pain, especially when you don’t know which one you need. Of course you could download a whole package of codecs, but sometimes you only need one codec and sometimes those codec packages contain viruses. AVIcodec makes it easy to find the codec that you need to play the audio or video files.

Just drag and drop a file into the AVIcodec window and it will analyze it and tell you which codec it uses. It will also tell you if your computer already has the codec installed. You could have AVIcodec open a whole folder to analyze. For instance, you could have copied a DVD to your hard drive that you want to find a codec to play, so you just open the folder of the copied DVD and it will search it for the video files.

Clicking on each individual video file in the list will show you whether your computer has the correct codec installed or not. Clicking on the “web” button will take you to the site where you can download the codec. It’s a great tool to have for future use. You never know when you’ll need to download a codec.
