Make World of Warcraft AddOns with AddOn Studio
By Josh | July 14, 2008
Since I’m still waiting to get my iPhone 3G, I decided to start learning how to make AddOns for WoW. I’ve been playing WoW off and on since it came out, and I’ve always been a big user of addons. However, lately there have been a couple of addons that I used to use that don’t work anymore. So I decided that I’d learn how to make addons so that I could create some of my own.
I first started by searching about how to make addons for WoW, but mostly I would just get information about the API. I was able to find a few short tutorials, and I’d definitely recommend going through some of the WoW Frames Tutorials especially if you don’t know much about XML. I’d also recommend taking a look at the WoWWiki site. They have a great list of API functions to use in developing addons.
However, there is an easier way to make an addon, and that is using the AddOn Studio for World of Warcraft. It is basically a special version of Visual Studio for developing WoW addons. It makes it really easy to design your graphical interface since all you have to do is drag an drop the objects that you want to your interface. Of course, you’ll still have to add the logic to your program through the lua files.
I’m currently in the process of making an addon, and when I get it closer to a working state I’ll probably make a post about it here. I’m not really sure of the time frame of when it will be complete, but I don’t think it will take any longer than a month. I’ll definitely release it as a test version at first to get all of the bugs ironed out.
If you have any other good resources for developing WoW addons, please post them in the comments below. I’m still looking for some informative sites.
