Get Safer and Faster Web Surfing with OpenDNS

By Josh | August 5, 2008

I personally get sick of constantly coming upon these websites that end up being a phishing site or porn site.  I usually get to these pages just by searching Google for something, and it ends up not being what I wanted at all.  Now, of course I’ve become pretty good at determining which sites are worthwhile just by looking at the details of the site before clicking on the link, but sometimes I accidentally click on a link that I wished I didn’t click on.

Over the past couple of days I’ve been using OpenDNS, which sets up a filter that will block any attempts at accessing these sites.  There are multiple levels of security that you can use, the minimal is just blocking phishing sites.  I currently have mine set to block phishing and porn sites.  So far it has already blocked a few websites from loading on my computer.

One feature that I like is the abililty to install it on just a computer and not a whole network.  I didn’t want to set it up on my whole home network so I just set it up on my personal computer.  However, you could set it up on a router if you do want it to filter the whole network.

OpenDNS also helps to speed up your connection by providing a fast DNS connection.  OpenDNS is free and is continually improving.
