Circle Dock: A Different Type of Dock

By Josh | August 13, 2008

I’ve seen all kinds of different docks for Windows.  There are of course the famous RocketDock and ObjectDock programs.  I personally have tried using both, but I really can’t get used to either one of them.  That’s strange since I really like AWN on Ubuntu.  I prefer Launchy to any other type of launcher, but I thought I’d go ahead and give another dock a try.  This time I’m trying out Circle Dock.

Circle Dock isn’t your typical type of dock where it sits on one of the four sides of your screen.  Instead it is invoked by a command similar to the way Launchy is opened.  The default command is CTRL+Windows.  This brings up a circular type dock that you can customize to your needs.  The icons zoom as you mouse over them, and adding an icon is as simple as dragging a file, shortcut, or folder to your dock.  You can change the look of your dock to a spiral to make it a little more stylish.

What’s nice about Circle Dock is that it isn’t always in your way if you don’t want it to be.  You can easily open it by pressing the correct key command.  It also always appears right at your mouses location so that you can quickly click on what you want.

Although it seems nice to me, I don’t like having to search for an icon to click.  I keep my desktop clean of any icons, and when I want to open anything I just use Launchy.  It seems a lot quicker to me to open something up by quickly typing in the name of what you want.  However, if you do like this type of dock, there is a video that the designers have made.  You can see the video below.
